‘The Unknown’ performed by Korhan Futacı

“The Unknown”, a horror classic from 1927, considered one of the most extraordinary productions in the history of cinema, will be showcased for the first time in Turkey at the A Summer Night Festival, with its magnificent restoration copy. Moreover, it will be accompanied by a live performance and music by Korhan Futacı.

The Unknown

1927 | USA | B&W | 63’ | Silent

Director: Tod Browning | Producer: Eduard Schnedler-Sørensen | Screenplay: Tod Browning, Waldemar Young, Joseph Farnham | Cast:  Lon Chaney, Norman Kerry, Joan Crawford

Alonzo is a man without arms who rises to fame in the circus world by performing remarkable feats using his feet. Concealing his true identity and harboring many dark secrets, Alonzo struggles with his feelings for his assistant Nanon while also trying to escape his past.

“The Unknown”, considered one of the strangest films to come out of Hollywood, is hailed as a true horror classic with its chilling storytelling and occasionally shocking scenes. The film is unforgettable not only for Lon Chaney's iconic performance but also for the allure of a young 18-year-old Joan Crawford. It possesses a creative use of camera angles, shadow play, and a tension-filled atmosphere that transcends its era. Rediscovered in the 1960s and known for many years only through its shortened version at the Cinematheque Française, the film underwent a remarkable restoration in 2021 by the George Eastman Museum. Supported by newly discovered scenes from the National Film Archive Collection in Prague, it has become a restoration marvel.

With the permission for digital restoration from the George Eastman Museum's 35mm prints and the Czech National Film Archive. Supported by the National Film Preservation Foundation.
