Kundura Cinema offers an alternative getaway plan from the chaotic city for the cinema lovers this spring. Focusing on Japanese films throughout April, Kundura Cinema invites audiences to a unique cinema experience with its curated film programme and interdisciplinary screenings.
A Journey to Japan from Kundura Cinema
Director Jia Zhang- Keifocuses on China’s economic and social transformation by following the traces of love, sorrow, cultural change and consumption frenzy through a broken family with Mountains May Departproduced in 2015.
Tokyo Story produced in 1953 by Yasujirô Ozu centers around The Hirayama couple who decides to visit their children living in Tokyo. After a trip full of various expectations and hopes a dramatic incident will change everything.
Tokyo Godfatherstells the story of three homeless people who –high school student Miyuki who left home, transgender Hana and middle-aged alcoholic Gin- find a baby in garbage on New Year’s Eve living in Tokyo. Produced in 2013 by the director Satoshi Kon, Tokyo Godfathers reflects a trio who have to face their own past.
Director Hsiao-Hsien Hou’s2003 produced Cafe Lumiere is about aYoung Taiwanese woman named Yoko’s distant relationship with her father who openly disapproves her life style and her intimate relationship with her mother who supports her no matter what.
Spotlights of Kundura Cinema April Programme
Charles Vidor’s 1946 produced Gilda tells the story of Gilda who is married to a wealthy club owner in Buenos Aires. Rita Hayworth’s memorable performance as a woman trapped in a love triangle will be screened at Kundura Cinema.
The lives, dreams, and destinies of extraordinary characters unfold in this impressionist dreamscape amid the ruins of a semi-abandoned mining town in City Of The Sun by Rati Oneli.
Silent Film Screenings with Live Music
Kundura Cinema’s most anticipated screenings with live music takes place in the April programme with the screening of selected silent films.
Ewald André Dupont’s 1929 produced, black-white silent film Piccadilly centers around a young Chinese woman working in the kitchen at a London dance club and given the chance to become the club's main act. Piccadilly will be accompanied by live piano performance of Ayşe Tütüncü.
Georg Wilhelm Pabst’s silent film Pandora’s Box produced in 1929 centers around a free-loving, status-climbing dancer who murders her rich paramour in Berlin, then takes up with a succession of other lovers. Louise Brooks’s breathtaking performance will be accompanied by live music of Yiğit Özatalayand Mustafa Kemal Emirel’s Yürüyen Merdiven.
Kids Special in Spring: “Animated Images” Workshop and Cartoon Screenings
Kundura Cinema invites kids aged between 7-10 to an entertaining and educating workshop by Museum Educator and writer Hüsne Rhea Çiğdem in April. From the creation of the cinema with Lumiere Brothers to the first ever screened cartoon “Fantasmagorie”, workshop will focus on the cinema history. Kids will have a chance to create their own thaumatropes and after the workshop selected cartoons from the Lobster Film catalogue will be screened. Parents are also welcomed to the cartoon screenings. The workshop will be held at Kundura Cinema on 27th of April, Saturday.
IDFA Documentaries - Short Creative Documentary Anthology
Kundura Cinema features selected documentaries from the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, IDFA.
Director David Verbeek’s 2018 produced Trapped In The City Of A Thousand Mountains focuses on the new phenomenon of the internet: authentic Chinese rap.Behind the unprecedented gains in popularity, there is a struggle for freedom of speech. The anxiety of the rappers will be featured in this 23 min. documentary.
Once Upon A Time In Shanghaiby the directorLeyli Gafarova produced in 2018centers around the capital of Azerbaijan where the skyscrapers built with oil money tower above the city and dilapidated houses are packed along a single railway line.
