Tracing Tehran’s transformation over more than a century through rare and never-before-seen archival footage, Tehran, An Unfinished History offers a layered look at Iran’s sociopolitical history. Stretching from the earliest years of cinema in Iran to the present day, this narrative reveals how wars, regime changes and ideological ruptures have reshaped a city. The modernization process that accelerated from the 1900s onward, the decisive role of oil politics and the social inequalities that came with Westernization are woven into a multilayered narrative as hundreds of archival images come together. Structured in three parts that evoke Dante’s Divine Comedy, the film approaches, as a cinematic collage, Tehran’s transformation as it breaks away from its traditional fabric, culminating in an ideological rupture and diaspora. Built from more than 180 archival clips drawn from over 150 works, Tehran, An Unfinished History had its world premiere at International Film Festival Rotterdam and, after drawing attention in international film circles, now meets audiences at Beykoz Kundura.
