Inviting audiences to discover and remember the Danish actress and producer Asta Nielsen, the first international star of early cinema, the silent film selection “The First Diva of Cinema: Asta Nielsen” opens with the 1921 film “Hamlet” at Kundura Sinema. The film, in which we will see Nielsen as Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, meets audiences on Saturday, October 21 at 16:30. Screened in the German Film Institute & Film Museum (DFF)’s restored print, this 102-year-old cult film will come back to life on the screen with live music by jazz legend Okay Temiz.

The silver screen’s second ‘female Hamlet’
Co-directed by Svend Gade and Heinz Schall, “Hamlet” is inspired by William Shakespeare’s famous stage character and by Edward P. Vining’s 1881 book “The Mystery of Hamlet.” Telling the story of a princess forced to disguise herself as a man because of her mother’s intrigues over the throne, the film paints an extraordinary portrait of a Hamlet who harbors a secret passion for Horatio and competes with Ophelia for his love. Having gone down in history as the second actress, after Sarah Bernhardt, to play Hamlet on the silver screen, Asta Nielsen captivates with her moving performance and, with her black tights and cape, creates one of cinema’s most iconic characters.
Screened with a live performance by world-renowned jazz musician Okay Temiz on Saturday, October 21 at 16:30, “Hamlet” awaits film and music lovers, as well as theater enthusiasts, at Kundura Sinema.
