Kundura Hafıza Research Request

Kundura Hafıza focuses on the history of industry, economics and labor, and on industrial cultural heritage, from the late Ottoman period to the early years of the Republic. Kundura Hafıza serves all researchers who wish to use its archive and library collections through a pre-request system.

  • The Kundura Hafıza Archive holds collections of more than 25.000 documents and objects, grouped under four headings: Sümerbank, Etibank, Oral History and Sac Ambarı (Sheet Metal Depot). The Sümerbank Collection includes documents, photographs, postcards, architectural plans, objects and textile products relating to all Sümerbank factories, above all the Beykoz Deri ve Kundura Fabrikası; the Etibank Collection includes photographs and documents relating to Etibank’s factories and mines; the Oral History Collection includes digital recordings of oral history interviews conducted with former employees of the Beykoz Deri ve Kundura Fabrikası; and the Sac Ambarı Collection covers objects used at the Beykoz Deri ve Kundura Fabrikası, such as machinery, hand tools, and office and medical equipment.

  • The Kundura Hafıza Archive and Research Center serves users every weekday from 10:00 to 17:00.

  • The Kundura Hafıza Archive is open to all researchers. Users who wish to use the archive must register at least one day in advance.

  • Registering to use the Archive and Library does not grant access to the other buildings and areas of the Beykoz Kundura campus. Users are not permitted to wander through, conduct research in, take measurements of, or make photographic, video, audio or similar recordings in buildings and areas outside the Archive and Research Center without permission.

  • Physical examination of archival materials and rare items is not permitted; only their digital copies may be viewed via the website.

  • While working in the archive and library, bags must be kept in locked lockers; only computers, notebooks and pencils are permitted in the reading room.

  • For digital documents, low-resolution images are available for research. For requests such as use in academic work, publications or for commercial purposes, users must additionally submit a written petition stating the place and purpose of use; once the management approves the request and the required copyright fee is paid, high-resolution digital copies are shared with the users.

  • If documents obtained from the Kundura Hafıza Archive are used for academic, cultural or commercial purposes, the source must be clearly credited with the wording “Kundura Hafıza Archive and Research Collection” and the relevant document/inventory number.

  • Documents obtained from the Kundura Hafıza Archive must not be altered, and their original content must be preserved.

  • For fieldwork concerning the Beykoz Kundura campus, its buildings or collections that is to be carried out on site as part of graduation projects, master’s theses, doctoral dissertations, academic articles and similar research, a written application must be submitted in advance. The application must state the researcher’s institution/department, the title and scope of the study, the buildings and areas to be researched, the documentation methods to be used and the anticipated dates of the work.

  • The fact that an academic study focuses on Beykoz Kundura does not grant the researcher direct access to the Beykoz Kundura campus, its buildings, archives or collections. On-site examination, fieldwork and the use of institutional resources are subject to Kundura Hafıza’s written approval and to the accessibility of the relevant areas.

  • For academic research, the Beykoz Kundura campus is not open in its entirety for research or access. For studies deemed appropriate by the institution, only the buildings and areas that can be opened for access may be examined, within the specified dates, times and conditions.

  • On the Beykoz Kundura campus, all forms of physical or digital documentation, including photography, video, audio recording, drone filming, measurement, architectural surveying, scanning, photogrammetry, 3D modeling and the like, are subject to the institution’s prior written permission. Having an academic purpose does not mean that any documentation activity is automatically permitted.

  • Any research or filming permission granted is valid only for the work, person(s), dates, area and purpose of use specified in the application. Researching or filming buildings outside the scope of the permission, or using the material obtained in a different study, publication or project, requires separate permission.

  • For reasons such as operational conditions, ongoing events and shoots, building safety, restoration work, collection security or similar grounds, the institution reserves the right to limit research requests, redirect them to a different date or close certain areas to access.

  • For completed academic theses, articles and research that make use of the Beykoz Kundura campus, the Kundura Hafıza Archive or its collections, we kindly ask that a digital copy be shared with Kundura Hafıza for preservation in the institutional archive.
