KUNDURA CINEMA CONTINUES SHOWCASING DIFFERENT DESTINATIONS AND SPECIAL SCREENINGS IN ITS JANUARY FILM PROGRAMME
Kundura Cinemawill take audiences from Miami to Helsinki, from Paris to the abandoned streets of Dakar with its January film programme. Focusing on films traveling around cities, the January lineup will include restored masterpieces never previously screened in Turkey and a special screening of Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot.
The first season of the screenings at Kundura Cinema kicked off last November in its historical environment. Diverse cinematic genres and never previously screened films in Turkey are waiting to be discovered in the January film programme of Kundura Cinema.
Produced in 2002 by the acclaimed director of the melancholic Finnish Cinema Aki Kaurasmäki’s The Man Without A Past, invites audiences to witness the new life of a man who lost his memory because of an assault in Helsinki. One of the most powerful films of Kaurismäki in terms of visual quality, The Man Without a Past includes tale-like elements on one hand and reveals the truth about capitalism through its amusing story on the other hand.
F.W. Murnau’s masterpiece produced in 1924 with the groundbreaking camera usage, The Last Laugh tells the touching story of the doorman at a luxurious hotel in Berlin. One of the most novel films of its time with its experimental and mobile camera, mise-en-scènes, grotesque images and cynical final, The Last Laugh will be screened with live musical accompaniment by Yiğit Özatalay and Mustafa Kemal Emirel’s Yürüyen Merdiven.
Director Lucrecia Martel’s The Headless Women, produced in 2006 tells the story of an injured women named Veronica. Over the course of the film Veronica and the audience are left to draw their own conclusions about the event in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, just as details of the protagonist’s social life unfurl to reveal the inequalities that form the basis the protagonist’s position in society.
The Journey of Hyena produced in 1975 by the outstanding director Djibril Diop Mambéty invites audiences to observe two young lovers trip to France from Dakar. On its surface, The Journey of Hyena is a film about a road trip, however audiences should expect the unexpected in this film full of the cacophony of the city seen through the eyes of impatient youth.
January film programme of Kundura Cinema will attract both young and old film lovers with Nut Jub 2. Produced in 2012, director Cal Brunken takes audiences to the streets of Oakland where squirrel Surly and his friends enjoyed their time in the peaceful nut shop. However Surly and his friends lose their peaceful home due to an accident in the shop and embark on a dangerous adventure to save their home.
The last new film of the January programme is Cléo from 5 to 7 by the memorable director Agnes Varda. Produced in 1962, Cléo from 5 to 7 captures Paris in 1960’s and tells the story of the young and beautiful singer Cléo. Audiences witnesses Cléo’s waiting outside the hospital to receive the results of a biopsy. Agnes Varda’s first major feature film Cléo from 5 to 7 is an essential film of the French New Wave that reflects the transformation of Cléo from a passive image of a perfect woman to a more human subject capable of exğressing her own desires and making her own decisions.
Audiences will have a second chance to see some of the outstanding films from the November-December film programme in January. These films include Jules Dassin’s The Naked City (1948), the opening film of the Kundura Cinema, The Naked City was restored for its 70th year anniversary at the 75th Venice International Film Festival; Playtime (1967) and Trafic (1971) by Jacque Tati and The Apartment (1960) by Billy Wilder, which was screened in Turkey for the first time at Kundura Cinema right after its screening at the 71st Festival de Cannes in the Cannes Classics.
Special Screening from Kundura Cinema: Some Like It Hot (Friday, 25 January 2019 @ 21.00)
Kundura Cinema kicks off the first special screening of 2019 with Billy Wilder’sSome Like It Hot.
Produced in 1959, the restored version of Some Like It Hot was first screened at the 31st Tokyo International Film Festival. Soon after its screening at the 75th Venice Film Festival and BFI Southbank, Kundura Cinema is proud to showcase the first screening of this famous classic in Turkey. One of the favorites of Billy Wilder, Some Like It Hotfascinates the audience with the outstanding performances of Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. Considered to be one of the greatest comedy films of all time, the film is about the adventures of unemployed musicians Joe and Jerry, who masquerade as women to escape from gangsters.
Kundura Cinema invites audiences to a unique film experience within the historical atmosphere of Beykoz Kundura. Transportation options are available and organised in accordance with the screenings.
