EXPLORE NEW THEMES AND NEW CITIES WITH THE FEBRUARY FILM PROGRAMME OF KUNDURA CINEMA
The first season of the screenings at Kundura Cinema kicked off last November in its historical environment. Focusing on iconic films traveling around cities Kundura Cinema continues its journey in February with new restored masterpieces never previously screened in Turkey and special Valentine’s Day screenings of the greatest film classics including Leo McCarey’s An Affair To Remember, Michael Curtiz’s Casablanca and finallyWilliam Wyler’s Roman Holiday.
The Boiler Room, which formed the heart of the factory complex, has been restored for the Kundura Cinema project to serve as one of the newest, and yet most historic, cultural platforms in Istanbul. The cinematic legacy of the factory is revived with curated screenings and parallel activities.
What’s Hot in February?
Along with the special themes viewers should expect to see five exciting new films in the February programme. Kundura Cinema also introduces screenings in weekdays and midday sessions in February.
Polish director Ewa Podgórska will let viewers to stroll in the subconscious of a city with Diagnosis, produced in 2018. Jim Jarmusch’s 1991 produced masterpiece Night on Earth tells the journey of taxi drivers in Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Roma and Helsinki.The city of Barcelonawill be rediscovered from a homeless man’s perspective in J uho-Pekka Tanskanen’s debut documentary film Waiting for Barcelona, produced in 2018. One of the greatest directors alive, Martin Scorsese’s 1974 classic Taxi Driver witnesses the story of a taxi driver named Travis Bickle who discovers the darkest places of New York. Another film that centers around the life of a taxi driver is Michael Mann’s 2004 produced Collateral. Film revolves around ruthless hitman Vincent and taxi driver Max’s all-night-long adventure in Los Angeles.
Valentine’s Day Anthology in Kundura Cinema (14-17 February 2019)
Director Leo McCarey ’s 1957 produced An Affair To Remember centers around the love story between womanizer Nickie Ferrante and jazz artist Terry McKay. Their love will pass the test, if they both come to the meeting at the top of Empire State, New York’s iconic skyscraper.
Produced in 1942, director Michael Curtiz’s memorable film Casablanca centers around a menage-a- trois between Rick, Ilsa and her husband Victor Laszlo in Casablanca, city of Morocco where Europeans hid away from Hitler during the World War II.
Bringing Audrey Hepburn the Best Actress Academy Award, Roman Holiday by William Wyler is about modern princess Ann who defied the impositions of the royalty and came to Rome by herself to discover the city. Produced in 1953, the story revolves around the love story of Ann and American journalist Joe.
Semester Holiday Screening: Nut Job 2 (3 February 2019)
February film programme of Kundura Cinema will attract both young and old film lovers with Nut Job 2. Produced in 2012, director Cal Brunken takes audiences to the streets of Oakland where squirrel Surly and his friends enjoyed their time in the peaceful nut shop. However Surly and his friends lose their peaceful home due to an accident in the shop and embark on a dangerous adventure to save their home.
Special Screening: Some Like It Hot (22 February 2019)
Kundura Cinema showcased the first special screening of the season with one of the favorites of Billy Wilder, Some Like It Hot last month. February programme offers the viewers a second chance to rediscover this masterpiece. Produced in 1959, considered to be one of the greatest comedy films of all time, the film is about the adventures of unemployed musicians Joe and Jerry, who masquerade as women to escape from gangsters with the outstanding performances of Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon.
Ongoing films from the January Programme
Produced in 1962, Cléo from 5 to 7 by the memorable director Agnes Varda, captures Paris in 1960’s and tells the story of the young and beautiful singer Cléo. The Journey of Hyena produced in 1975 by the outstanding director Djibril Diop Mambéty invites audiences to observe two young lovers trip to France from Dakar.
Produced in 2002 by the acclaimed melancholic director of the Finnish Cinema Aki Kaurasmäki’s The Man Without A Past, invites audiences to witness the new life of a man who lost his memory because of an assault in Helsinki. F.W. Murnau’s masterpiece produced in 1924 with the groundbreaking camera usage, The Last Laugh tells the touching story of the doorman at a luxurious hotel in Berlin. One of the most novel films of its time with its experimental and mobile camera, mise-en-scènes, grotesque images and cynical final, The Last Laugh will be screened with live musical accompanimentby Yiğit Özatalayand Mustafa Kemal Emirel’s Yürüyen Merdiven.
