"No other film has ever managed to portray as deeply what is ingrained in the Brazilian unconsciousness” - Luiz Carlos Merten, Journalist & Film Critic

The award-winning documentary Housemaids by Gabriel Mascaro, who has been acclaimed worldwide at festivals such as Locarno, Toronto, Berlinale, Sundance with his films “August Winds” (2014), “Neon Bull” (2015) and “Divino Amor” (2015), observes the goings-on ‘inside’ seven different houses in Brazil, which is one of the leading countries to employ most house workers, while bringing one of the remnants of the country’s colonial past, household labor into question.

Mascaro hands in digital cameras to seven young people of his choice belonging to different social economical classes, religions and regions, and asks them to record the housemaids who work and live at their houses. For a whole week, these ‘home videos’ follow the women who take on household chores such as cooking, cleaning, ironing and childcare, and witness the interactions of these women who live together with a family of strangers, while capturing their innermost emotions profoundly. In time, these lives of intertwined sincerity and power relations reveal how the colonial past still exists in every household.

Premiered at IDFA and awarded Best Documentary at various festivals, the Brazilian screening of Housemaids coincided with the passing of the new law that granted more rights and higher wages to the house workers in 2013, and also sparked debates in the country where it is almost mandatory for middle and high-class families to employ housemaids.

GABRIEL MASCARO was born in Recife, Brazil in 1983. In 2008, he won Special Jury Prize at São Paulo Film Festival with his documentary debut “The Beetle KFZ-1348”. Mascaro’s documentaries and video installations have been screened at leading festivals and art institutions’ programmes like Rotterdam (IFFR), Oberhausen, Clermont Ferrand, BFI London, Guggenheim, Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, MoMA Documentary Fortnight and São Paulo Art Biennale. Directed in 2012, his documentary “Housemaids” competed and won many awards at IDFA where it had its world premiere. In 2014, his first feature-length fiction film ‘Ventos de agosto” competed at Locarno and was given Special Mention. His second feature film “Neon Bull” won Special Jury Price at Venice where it had its international debut in 2015, received Honorable Mention at Toronto and won more than 30 awards. In 2016, an artist retrospective was organized at Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York, (USA). His latest film “Divino Amor” which he directed in 2019 competed at the World Cinema section at Sundance and Forum programme at Berlinale.
